When we diffuse essential oils , molecules are distributed into the air so effectively, maximizing all the beneficial properties of the oils. Diffusing essential oils also connects the aroma to our emotions. Yes I know it sounds crazy. When I first heard of this I laughed. You probably are too. But, once I found this explanation I was AMAZED…
Why is it that when you walk into a restaurant and smell a delicious pie cooking it reminds you of Christmas day. Or when you catch a drift of wood smoke it reminds you of camping as a child. There is a reason those memories are triggered. After a smell enters the nose, it travels the olfactory bulb. The olfactory bulb transmits smell information from the nose to the brain. If our bodies didn’t have an olfactory bulb, we would have no sense of smell. The olfactory bulb is part of the Limbic System. The Limbic System of the brain houses our emotion and the formation of memories. What?!? Isn’t God amazing! It gets even better… The Limbic system also has an area called the Amygdala. This area cues our memories! So…what in the world does this have to do with diffusing essential oils? The close relationship between he olfactory bulb and the amygdala is one of the reason that when we smell certain smells, it reminds us of special memories, childhood, important events, etc…
If I’m being honest, a lot of essential oils just plain STINK! An essential oil favorite of my boys is “Owie” oil. It is a blend oil of several beneficial oils used for skin support. But guess what? It smells like cat pee to me. Yuck! I have since gotten used to the smell and actually enjoy it now. But my initial memory triggered was not so pleasant! Now that I know this intricate process that of how God created this system, I enjoy cracking open a brand new bottle of an oil and letting my brain work how God intended for it to. Now you know that we diffuse not only for the benefit of the oils in our bodies, but also support our emotions by our memories.
There are several ways that you can do this…
- You may simply open a bottle of essential oil and inhale or put a few drops of oil on the palm of your hand, rub your hands together, and then cup your hands over your nose and mouth and inhale. You can even add a few drops of oil to a bowl of hot (not boiling) water and inhale the vapor.
